7 new tax partners for BDO UK
BDO Stoy Hayward LLP has announced the appointment of 13 new partners, with effect from 1 July 2006.
All of these new partners are currently employees of the firm, some of whom joined as trainees. The number of appointments reflects both the firm’s recent growth and its ambitions for the future. In particular, the appointment of seven new tax partners reflects the significant growth of the firm’s Tax Stream.

These appointments will help us to drive forward our ambitious growth strategy, achieve greater sector focus and enhance the depth of technical expertise across the UK. We pride ourselves on having great people and these new partners are a reflection of this.”
Eight of the new partners are based in London, with the rest located across the firm’s Regional Business Centres. The appointments are as follows:
Paul Ayres (London, Tax) began his career in the banking sector before spending time with medium sized firms where he qualified as a CTA. He joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2000. Paul will play a key role in developing the Private Client Group’s international consultancy offering and will also provide technical expertise to our Tax Investigation Team.
Brandon Barnes (London, Restraint & Confiscation Unit – Business Recovery) joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 1981 as a trainee and has been with the firm’s Restraint & Confiscation Unit since its inception. Brandon’s primary focus will be to further develop the pre-eminent position of this specialist unit.
David Brookes (Reading, Tax) qualified as a chartered accountant with a small firm before spending time with a number of “Big 4” firms. He joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2001. David is a recognised expert in tax efficient investments (representing the CBI on this subject) and is the firm’s specialist in EIS/VCT.
Andrew Buchanan (London, Business Assurance) qualified as chartered accountant with a small firm prior to joining a “Big 4” firm in 1992. He joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2004. Andrew is an expert in UK and International Financial Reporting issues and his primary focus will be to lead the firm’s Financial Reporting Unit.
Matthew Chadwick (Guildford, Business Recovery) joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 1990 as a trainee. Matthew will lead the firm’s National Court Work initiative, which is an important and growing area for the firm, focusing on personal insolvency and Court driven liquidations.
Joanne (“Jo”) Gilbey (Bromley, Tax) trained with a number of small firms prior to spending time with a number of “Big 4” firms.. She joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2005. Jo has a varied technical and commercial skillset with strong credentials in handling complex assignments for major clients.
Simon Girling (Bristol, Business Recovery) qualified as a chartered accountant with a “Big 4” firm and was a partner in the Bristol office of Numerica. He joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2005, as a result of our acquisition of the office. His main focus will be to help drive the growth of the Business Recovery practice in Bristol.
Brent Goldman (London, Corporate Finance) qualified as a chartered accountant with BDO Nelson Parkhill (Australia) and joined the UK firm in 1998. Brent is an experienced member of the Investigations and IPO team with expertise in handling large, complex overseas and UK projects.
Jonathan Hickman (London, Tax) joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 1997. He is an “all round” tax advisor with the ability to provide first class advice on corporate and personal tax issues to a broad range of clients, ranging from high net worth individuals, large owner managed businesses to multi-nationals. Jon has particular experience of the retail and media sectors.
Adrian L Jones (Birmingham, Corporate Finance) qualified as a chartered accountant with a “Big 4” firm in 1995 and joined BDO Stoy Hayward in 2004. Adrian specialises in Mergers and Acquisitions and his appointment will provide additional capacity to continue the expansion of our Midlands unit which has grown significantly over the last three years.
Andrew Levene (London, Tax) trained as a chartered accountant with a medium sized firm before spending time with Binder Hamlyn, a “Big 4” firm and then a niche property practice, joining BDO Stoy Hayward in 2004. He is a property tax specialist and his appointment will provide additional capacity to build on the firm’s strong reputation within the property sector.
Gail Perkins (London, Tax) qualified as a chartered accountant and as a member of ATII with a “Big 4” firm, securing prizes in both examinations. She spent time in Australia prior to joining BDO Stoy Hayward in 2004. Gail handles large, complex assignments.
Tony Spillett (London, Tax) joined BDO Stoy Hayward as a trainee in 1992. He is an “all round” tax advisor, with particular expertise in the project management of services to large corporate clients.
