Sean Wakeman has been appointed National Director, Tax Investigations with Horwath Clark Whitehill.
Sean joined the firm in May 2006, having previously been a Partner (and Head of Tax Investigations) at Numerica LLP. Before joining Numerica LLP (formerly known as Levy Gee) in 1999, Sean spent four years in the tax investigations team at Ernst & Young following his departure from H M Revenue & Customs in 1995. In his final three years with the former Inland Revenue Sean worked in the Special Civil Investigations team (formerly known as Special Compliance Office) investigating large scale tax avoidance and cases of suspected serious fraud.
Sean gained a joint honours degree in ancient history and archaeology from the University of Nottingham, and qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1997.
Sean provides confidential tax advice to accountants and their clients. He is particularly experienced in dealing with cases handled by the Special Civil Investigations offices. He specialises in handling cases of suspected serious fraud and is expert in the preparation of disclosure reports (formerly known as Hansard reports). In addition, he negotiates settlements with H M Revenue & Customs at all levels and advises in respect of all aspects of tax investigation matters including the use of the department’s formal information powers. Sean also deals with larger local tax office enquiries particularly where there is an ‘offshore’ tax angle. He is also skilled in facilitating voluntary disclosures to the tax authorities in a manner which ensures that enquiries remain on a civil basis.
Sean is a member of the ICAEW Tax Investigations Practitioner Group and an Associate at the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
