Smith & Williamson, the independent investment management, financial advisory and accounting group, is delighted to announce that Richard Mannion has been appointed Head of the National Tax Function with effect from 23rd October. He will be responsible for disseminating tax information across the group and ensuring quality control. Richard was previously Head of Tax at Solomon Hare which merged with Smith & Williamson in 2005.

Richard is a former President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and is currently a member of the Institute’s Technical and Personal Tax Committees. He is also a member of the Working Together project, which sees professional bodies working with HM Revenue & Customs to identify and resolve problems within the tax system.

Richard said: “I’m delighted to be taking on this technical and public-facing role in a rapidly changing and uncertain tax environment. I thoroughly enjoy helping clients, but also working behind the scenes with the tax authorities to improve the system for the benefit of all taxpayers.”

Earlier this year, Richard won the Lifetime Achievement award at the LexisNexis Taxation Awards in recognition of his contribution to the tax industry. His award submission was supported by several respected tax professionals including Sir David Varney, former chairman of HMRC, who described Richard as a visionary who set out to build a new relationship between practitioners and the tax administration.

Jeremy Boadle, Managing Director of Tax and Business Services at Smith & Williamson, said: “Richard’s appointment is well deserved. As a former president of the CIOT and previously Head of Tax at Solomon Hare, he brings a wealth of experience to the role. I very much look forward to working with him as National Tax Director for Smith & Williamson.”

Richard Mannion began his career with the Inland Revenue in 1965. He joined Solomon Hare in 1972, where he was admitted as a partner in 1981. Richard has been head of tax at Solomon Hare since 1989, responsible for quality control, standards and training. His role at Smith & Williamson will be an extension of that position and include media comment. He will spend time in each of Smith & Williamson’s offices.

Richard’s parallel career with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) started in 1975, and included a term as President of CIOT from May 2000 to 2001. Richard remains a member of the Technical Committee and the Personal Tax Committee. He is also a member of the Working Together project, which sees professional bodies working with HM Revenue & Customs to identify and resolve procedural problems within the tax system.
