Justin Hamer promoted to Tax Partner at Paul Hastings
Justin Hamer has been promoted to Tax Partner in the London offfice of law firm Paul Hastings.
Justin has significant experience advising international clients on a broad spectrum of financial, tax and business matters relating to private equity, funds, and real estate and across a diverse range of other industries. Justin provides advice on both direct and indirect tax. His practice has a particular emphasis on tax efficient cross-border planning for funds and multi-national groups, including real estate funds, private equity and hedge funds together with the attendant advice on transfer pricing, double tax treaty interpretation, and value added tax.
Having previously worked for the Inland Revenue, Justin has significant experience advising clients in respect of tax negotiations, disputes and litigation. His most recent transactions have included advising on the tax structure and documentation for the Eur360m purchase of a pan-European hotel group; the Eur130m sale and leaseback of a pan-European property portfolio; the tax structure for a Eur650m bid for a pan-European hotel group; a mezzanine fund on its reorganisation of UK oil assets and subsequent disposal; the tax structure and UK tax aspects of a Sterling1bn acquisition of a major hotel group; the acquisition of a shopping centre for Sterling270m using a Jersey property unit trust as the joint venture vehicle; advising a Canadian pension fund with regard to tax structuring of its platform for European investments; the formation and structuring of a Eur1bn European real estate opportunity fund on behalf of a leading US banking group together with the attendant cross-border tax planning for the efficient acquisition and disposal of investments; the formation and structuring of two Asian focused real-estate funds raising in aggregate $560m; the cross-border tax structuring for an investment into the circa Eur7bn acquisition of Vittera AG on behalf of a leading US banking group; the tax efficient reorganisation of the European group of a US wire production business prior to its injection into a Sterling90m joint venture and the restructuring of a UK retail business in administration.
He has given seminars to both clients and lawyers on various aspects of UK taxation and regularly contributes articles to tax journals; more notably he previously co-authored the Tax Clearances chapter in the PLC Tax Manual. He is also an active member of the International Fiscal Association.
Justin graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1991 with a BA Combined Honours degree in History and Philosophy. He was admitted as a Solicitor in England and Wales in January 1999.
