HRO Hires New Tax Partner
Holme Roberts & Owen LLP (HRO) has announced that G. Michelle Ferreira has joined the firm’s San Francisco office as a partner in the Tax Group.
The move represents another addition to the expansion of the firm’s Tax Group on the West Coast. In January, 2007, HRO attracted Ed Schuck from McDermott Will & Emery, LLP as a partner in the Los Angeles office to Chair the Tax and Corporate Practices on the West Coast. HRO continues to gain momentum in its efforts to recruit top legal talent. With federal tax litigation expertise in San Francisco (Michelle Ferreira) and Los Angeles (Ed Schuck), state and local tax controversy expertise in Salt Lake City (Mark Buchi, Gary Thorup and Steven Young), and federal, state and local tax controversy experience in Colorado (Charles Ramunno and Charlie Bruce), HRO is well placed to handle federal and state tax litigation throughout the West.
Ms. Ferreira’s practice will complement HRO’s prominent federal income state and local tax practices in Denver, Salt Lake City, Boulder, Colorado Springs, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Tax Group provides counsel to corporations, trusts, partnerships, individuals, charitable organizations and other entities on local, domestic and multi-national levels, and it includes a prominent federal and state tax litigation practice. The Tax Group has in-depth experience and knowledge and has advised clients in the mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, banking and finance, commercial real estate, technology, oil and gas, mining, telecommunications, and public utilities arenas.
Ms. Ferreira was most recently Of Counsel at Greenberg Traurig, L.L.P., where she spent three years in the firm’s tax department working exclusively on federal and state tax controversy matters. She has worked in both the private and public sectors of tax and spent eight years as a tax litigator for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Ms. Ferreira litigates federal and state tax controversies involving individuals, partnerships, estates, and corporations in tax and penalty disputes. She represents clients in federal and state tax controversies before the IRS and state and local taxing agencies at the audit, collection, appeals, and litigation stages. Ms. Ferreira is nationally recognized for her audit and litigation experience in estate and gift tax disputes with the IRS, especially cases involving challenges to family limited partnerships and valuation disputes. She also advises clients in wealth preservation and estate planning through the use of tax-efficient methods.
“We are delighted to have Michelle join the firm,” said Paul Smith, leader of the firm’s Tax Group. She is a terrific addition to our tax practice and gives us an opportunity to better serve clients, not only in the California offices, but throughout the firm.”
Ms. Ferreira received her Juris Doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of California at Davis. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Executive Committee, Tax Section, of the California State Bar and she is actively involved in the Tax Section of the American Bar Association and the San Francisco Tax Club .
