Nanjing University wins Deloitte Tax Championship 2007
Nanjing University won the top honour of Deloitte Tax Championship 2007 displaying outstanding performance in the final competition held on 12 October 2007 in Guangzhou, China. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and University of Science and Technology of China are named the first and second runner-up respectively while Zhongnan University of Economics and Law received the Best Live Presentation Award. This year;s competition attracted a record high number of participation from 47 universities in the Greater China Region.
The Championship’s essay competition named the best three papers with the honour goes to Wang Chun Wei of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Bao Yin of Soochow University and Kao Wang Yu of National Taiwan University. A total of eight merit papers had been selected and the authors made presentations to the judging panel for final assessment that day. The essay competition encourages in-depth tax analysis and research among postgraduate students around the theme of China’s new Enterprise Income Tax Law.
“One of our key objectives of the Championship is to nurture university students’ interest in tax studies and practice, helping to build the next generation of top-notch tax professionals contributing to the overall excellence in the areas of taxation.” Mr. Joseph Tse, Tax Managing Partner of Deloitte China, said at an award presentation ceremony held immediately after the final competition in Guangzhou. “Given the record high participation of universities and the passion and exceptional performance of participating students we witnessed throughout the Championship, we believe that the Championship has achieved this end,” Mr. Tse said.
Mr. Alan Tsoi, Chairman of the 2007 Tax Championship Organising Committee, said, “I am very pleased to see students’ performance improving every year. Through the Championship, students achieved a deeper understanding of the tax regime and greater awareness of the latest tax issues. It helps build a solid foundation for them as responsible tax advisors providing sound and legitimate solutions for businesses.”
Ms. Becky Lai, chair of the judging panel assessing the finalists’ case studies said that the judging panel focused on the depth and breadth of the solutions and whether they are logical and analytical. Commenting on the performance of the students, Ms. Lai said that the finalists exhibited their in-depth comprehension of China’s tax law and business practice by formulating viable tax solutions to the simulated business case within the very short two-hour preparation time.
Mr. Miao Zhi Cheng, who chaired the judging panel for essay competition, said, “We are impressed with the substantial and ingenious thoughts presented by the writers who provided analytical and convincing views on the content of China’s new tax law as well as the development of tax reform in a systematic manner. Regardless whether they are honoured with the award, the finalists have demonstrated their high level of professionalism in the competition.”
Ms Chen Li Hua, who led the Champion team of Nanjing University, said that they are honoured yet surprised to receive this award as it is the first time that the school participated in this competition. “This challenge puts our students to test and provides them a unique and precious learning experience, enabling them to have a taste of working as tax professionals in real-life business scenarios,” Ms Chen said.
The 11 finalist teams include Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Macau University of Science & Technology, Nanjing University, National ChengChi University, South China University of Technology, Southwestern University of Finance & Economics, Sun Yat-sen University, Tsinghua University, University of Science & Technology of China, Xiamen University, and Zhongnan University of Economics & Law.
Deloitte Tax Championship, which is an important initiative of the Deloitte Tax Research Foundation, was first held in 2004. The Champions of the 2004 to 2006 were Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Sun Yat-sen University and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, respectively.
