Stephen Hoffman Joins Alvarez & Marsal Taxand from Gillette
Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC, an affiliate of the leading independent global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), has announced that Stephen Hoffman, former vice president of global taxes at Gillette, has joined as a managing director. He is based in New York. With nearly 30 years of tax experience, Mr. Hoffman focuses on M&A and international tax matters. Prior to joining A&M, he served as vice president of global taxes for Gillette, where, following Procter & Gamble’s $55 billion takeover, he led the integration from the Gillette side. Also during his tenure at the consumer products giant, Mr. Hoffman oversaw the tax aspects of various operational changes and global expansions, which were a key factor in the financial turnaround of Gillette and accounted for a significant portion of the incremental transaction value realized by the shareholders. Prior to this industry tax leadership role, he spent 23 years with Arthur Andersen, most recently as an international tax partner in its Metro New York practice.
“Steve’s depth of experience in handling large corporate tax matters and breadth of knowledge regarding regulatory, compliance and other intricacies associated with M&A and cross-border situations is extensive,” said Robert N. Lowe, Jr., head of A&M Taxand. “His leadership and insight gained from his recent industry experience, plus his extensive consulting background, are great complements to our growing team of senior tax professionals, and will provide a valuable perspective to our clients.”
In addition to his international M&A skills, Mr. Hoffman brings significant experience in repatriation and cash management planning techniques, foreign tax credit utilization, cross-border financings, and global effective tax rate management. With his industry experience, he has dealt firsthand with the increasing complexity of income tax accounting and reporting since the advent of Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404, and has led the improvement of internal processes to support compliance efforts. As a tax partner with Arthur Andersen in three different locations, Mr. Hoffman held several leadership positions and served a number of public companies in the forest products industry. In Atlanta, he led the Southeast region M&A practice, before moving to Warsaw, Poland to build the firm’s nascent tax practice after the fall of communism. Upon returning to the U.S., he served as the partner-in-charge of Arthur Andersen’s Stamford, CT tax practice, before relinquishing that role to serve one of the firm’s largest global tax engagements.
Mr. Hoffman received a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting from Duke University and a master’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in finance, from the University of Chicago. He serves as a trustee of Elmira College and sits on its executive committee.
