Veteran Government Tax Officials, Stuart J. Bassin & Allen J. Littman, Join Baker Hostetler

 In Baker Hostetler, tax litigation

Baker Hostetler announced today that veteran government officials Stuart J. Bassin and Allen J. Littman have joined Baker Hostetler’s Tax Group.

Prior to joining Baker Hostetler, Mr. Bassin served as Senior Litigation Counsel with the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division, where he litigated as lead counsel many of the Tax Division’s largest, most complex, and important tax cases, including AWG Leasing Trust, Jade Trading, Coltec Industries, and Rite Aid.

Mr. Bassin will represent clients with tax litigation and tax controversy issues.  As Senior Counsel at the Department of Justice, Stuart managed all aspects of numerous complex tax litigation matters, including the development of litigation strategies, legal arguments and factual contentions, discovery, expert witness preparation, pre-trial, trial, and post-trial proceedings.  Stuart received six Outstanding Attorney Awards from the Department of Justice.  He routinely coordinated with IRS Chief Counsel and top enforcement officials, and often conferred on policy issues with Treasury’s Office of Tax Policy.

Prior to joining Baker Hostetler, Mr. Littman served as Legislation Counsel with the Joint Committee on Taxation, United States Congress, where he focused on the development of international tax legislation and tax treaty issues.  Before serving with the JCT, Mr. Littman was the Director of International Tax at a Fortune 25 multinational telecommunications and technology corporation.

Mr. Littman will represent clients on a broad range of issues, including international tax controversy and international tax planning.  Allen will serve Baker Hostetler clients by drawing upon his many years of tax experience and his prior roles as (i) outside tax counsel, (ii) corporate tax executive responsible for the design, implementation and defense of corporate tax strategies, and (iii) Congressional tax staff responsible for the formulation and implementation of effective tax legislation and treaty policy.

“Stuart Bassin and Allen Littman add ‘Best-in-Class’ talent and experience to our Tax Group, which has an outstanding track record of delivering successful results in complex tax litigation and tax planning matters,” said Jeffrey Paravano, firmwide Chair of Baker Hostetler’s Tax Group.  “Stuart’s tax litigation at the Department of Justice and Allen’s government and global in-house international tax experience further strengthen our ability to offer comprehensive tax litigation and tax counseling services to our clients.  With more than eighty tax attorneys serving ten offices and more than forty tax attorneys handling complex tax controversy matters on a regular basis, our Tax Group is one of the legal profession’s largest.”

“We are pleased to expand our Washington, D.C., office with the addition of such experienced and respected practitioners as Stuart Bassin and Allen Littman,” said Office Managing Partner William Schweitzer. “Our ability to attract talent of this caliber is a testament to Baker Hostetler’s strength in this key practice area.”
