Ellis has 30 years of experience in tax, estate planning, charitable giving, and trust and estate administration. He has a particular expertise working with business founders and public corporation executives and has advised corporate and individual fiduciaries of trusts and estates and senior executives of family businesses, as well. Ellis has deep experience spanning the full array of wealth transfer and estate planning techniques, including planning for transfers of compensatory stock options and restricted stock, private company equity in advance of M&A transactions and IPOs, interests in private investment funds, and structured financial instruments. In the administration area, Ellis is focused on modern fiduciary duties imposed when constructing and administering investment portfolios, as well as intra-state trust planning for reducing the burden of state-level fiduciary income and death taxes. Prior to joining JP Morgan, he was a partner with McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen.
Ellis is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a past chair of the California Bar’s Trust and Estate Section, where he also served on the Section’s Executive Committee for 10 years. He is a past editor of the California Trusts and Estates Quarterly, a frequent author and has spoken before numerous organizations on tax and estate planning. Ellis earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law (1979) and his B.S., with honors, from Michigan State University (1970).
