Robert Young has been made a tax partner at[private] Taylor Wessing as of 1 July 09.

Robert is a partner in the corporate tax division of the private client, tax and incentives department, with over eight years experience of advising corporate and personal clients on tax planning and structuring and the tax implications of transactions in many fields. Robert became a partner in 2009.

Robert has particular expertise in the tax aspects of funds (including structuring and establishment of funds), debt and equity capital markets issues, real estate and corporate real estate transactions (including SDLT and VAT) private equity fund structuring and deals and general M&A. Since joining Taylor Wessing Robert has advised on:

* the structuring and implementation of an innovative scheme for non-domiciled financial brokers to accrue income outside the UK tax net;
* the UK tax implications of a reorganisation of a major international engineering group, involving the transfer of the UK business to a German subsidiary;
* structuring the sale of a part of an existing business of a UK company in a tax efficient manner, through the use of a liquidation scheme of reconstruction to avoid taxable disposals for shareholders; and
* advising a leading bank in relation to its Shari’a law compliant refinancing of a property fund.

He has also advised on various private equity investments in UK companies and a number of corporate and real estate sales and acquisitions.

Prior to joining the firm, Robert was heavily involved in advising UK and offshore investment funds and hedge funds on their UK tax position and retains a keen interest in this important sector.

Robert is a qualified solicitor and a Chartered Tax Adviser, having completed the examinations of the Chartered Institute of Tax in 2002, and holds a degree in law from Cambridge University. Whilst at his previous firm, he was a co-founder of the “chess partners” scheme at the Thomas Buxton Junior School in Spitalfields, London, and now acts as coordinator of a similar reading-partnering scheme at the St Jude’s Church of England Primary School in Southwark.
