Tax Litigator joins McCarthy Tétrault
McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that Chia-yi Chua has joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Tax Practice. Mr. Chua practises exclusively in the area of tax litigation and tax disputes resolution. He has acted for companies in the financial services, telecommunications, resources, retail and transportation sectors, and has litigated before the Tax Court of Canada, Federal Court of Appeal, Ontario Court of Appeal, and Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Mr. Chua also understands tax issues from the government’s perspective, having practised with the Ontario Ministry of Revenue/Finance.
The firm’s clients are increasingly seeking skills such as Mr. Chua’s, to resolve and litigate tax issues and disputes arising from complex transactions and transfer pricing arrangements. “Chia-yi will be a tremendous addition to our team,” said Doug Cannon, national leader of the firm’s Tax Group. “His experience will be invaluable in guiding our clients to understand, strategize, resolve and — if necessary — litigate any tax issue that a large enterprise could encounter.”
Mr. Chua is often invited by auditors, appeals officers, and the tax and finance departments of North American corporations to share his expertise and understanding of tax issues. He has written for various tax publications including Tax Litigation, to which he also contributes by serving on its Board of Editors. He also regularly addresses the Tax Executives Institute.

Mr. Chua is recommended in Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2010, as one of Canada’s leading tax litigation lawyers and is “praised for his skills in strategy and his ability to explain complex issues to clients.” World Tax, an international guide to tax firms, singled out Mr. Chua as a leader in tax litigation and controversy resolution, and he has been included in both the 2010 and 2011 editions of Best Lawyers in Canada.
In 2009, Mr. Chua was recognized by Canadian Immigrant as one of Canada’s top 25 immigrants.
