Patrick McCalman joins Deloitte New Zealand as a tax partner in the Wellington office
Deloitte has announced the appointment of Patrick McCalman as a tax partner in the firm’s Wellington office.
Mr McCalman recently joined Deloitte after spending the past nine years in executive roles at two of the country’s leading financial services institutions.
Mr McCalman says his experience being the general manager of tax at two of New Zealand’s leading financial services institutions has resulted in him having an intimate understanding of the range of issues these businesses can encounter.
“I think it’s fair to say I appreciate exactly the types of problems many CFOs are dealing with on a day-to-day basis and this certainly provides an advantage when developing the appropriate solutions,” Mr McCalman says.
“The key is to being able to translate these experiences into practical advice for clients and making the hard issues simple to solve.”
Joining Deloitte from the corporate world was a significant career step for Mr McCalman and reflects his philosophy of always striving to “stretch and drive”.
“My aspiration is always to maintain best practice around the management of an organisation’s internal tax capability, and in my role at Deloitte I aim to bring that approach to my client interactions.”
In addition to a continuing focus on financial services, one of his key priorities will be to work with corporate chief financial officers to build and augment internal tax capabilities, helping them understand their organisation’s tax risk, and how best to manage that risk.
Deloitte Managing Tax Partner Thomas Pippos says Mr McCalman is highly regarded in the tax community, as proven by his former role as a co-convenor of the Corporate Tax Group.
“Patrick joins us with extremely high credentials and a wealth of personal experience in the corporate environment, particularly in the financial services industry, and we believe this will make a significant contribution to the service we can offer our clients,” Mr Pippos says.
