DLA Piper strengthens international trade offering in Asia with the hiring of William Marshall into the HK Tax Group
DLA Piper today announced the appointment of international trade lawyer, William Marshall, as Of Counsel in the Hong Kong office. William joins DLA Piper from US-based multinational apparel retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch, where he was the sole in-house counsel in Asia.
Whilst at Abercrombie & Fitch, William was responsible for a wide range of legal matters affecting the company in the Asia Pacific region including corporate formation, foreign direct investment, commercial agreements, regulatory compliance matters, and merchandise sourcing structure. In addition, he was responsible for international trade, customs, indirect tax and anti-corruption matters worldwide. He also served as the Director of Abercrombie & Fitch’s Asian subsidiaries assuming responsibility for general operational and legal matters.
Previously, William was an associate at Grunfeld, Desiderio, Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt LLP in New York, the largest customs and international trade boutique law firm in the US, where his practice focused primarily on the representation of respondents in trade remedy proceedings. Before beginning a career in law, William was a licensed US customs broker and corporate account manager at global logistics provider Expeditors International.
William Marshall said, “DLA Piper has a strong reputation and profile in Asia-Pacific and a truly global offering that is very complementary of my practice. I am very pleased to be joining the team and also look forward to putting my recent experience to good use whilst working with the firm’s excellent Fashion group.”
Daniel Chan, Head of Tax for Asia, commented: “We are delighted to welcome William to the team. Whilst at Abercrombie & Fitch, William was responsible for the successful expansion of the company into Asia as its first, and sole, in-house counsel in the region. As a result, he has gained invaluable experience that makes him a true asset to both the Asia group and the Hong Kong office. The addition of William solidifies our position as Asia’s leading firm for supply chain advice and structuring.”
Lance Miller, Regional Managing Partner of DLA Piper Asia, added: “The continual growth and development of our offering in Asia Pacific is a strategic priority for firm. We have made a number of significant hires recently which, combined with the appointment of William, shows our commitment to the recruitment of leading talent in the region.”
