Dwight N. Mersereau joins MWE from Miller Chevalier
International law firm McDermott Will & Emery today announced that it has named Dwight N. Mersereau as a partner in its U.S. and International Tax practice group, based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office. A prominent Washington tax practitioner, Mr. Mersereau has served inside the Internal Revenue Service and has been involved in shaping tax policy through legislation, U.S. Department of the Treasury regulation projects, revenue rulings, and private letter rulings He joins the Firm from the Washington office of Miller Chevalier.
Often consulted by policy makers grappling with difficult tax accounting issues, Mr. Mersereau has represented individual clients, industry associations, and client coalitions before Congress, the Treasury, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He focuses his practice on large, multinational corporate clients in high-stakes policy, planning, and controversy matters. These projects typically involve complex, highly technical tax accounting issues often involving billions of dollars. Mr. Mersereau also represents clients involved in controversies with the IRS at all levels of the proceedings, including during examination, at Appeals, and in litigation before the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Mersereau’s government experience includes four years of service in the Internal Revenue Service’s Office of the Associate Chief Counsel (Income Tax & Accounting) from 1995 to 1999. Prior to that he served as Head Trial Counsel at the Charleston Naval Base and as a lawyer in the U.S. Navy’s Office of the Judge Advocate General.
A frequent speaker on tax matters, Mr. Mersereau is also a former Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law Center. He received his J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law and holds a Master’s degree in Taxation from the University of Florida College of Law. Mr. Mersereau is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and the State of New Mexico. He is also admitted to appear before the United States Tax Court and the Supreme Court of New Mexico.
