Mayer Brown has announced that noted capital markets tax attorney Mark H. Leeds has joined the firm in New York as a partner in the Tax Transactions & Consulting practice. Previously, he was a shareholder in the New York office of Greenberg Traurig.

“Mark is one of the nation’s preeminent advisors on the tax aspects of capital markets, structured finance, derivatives, financial products and insurance transactions,” said Jason Bazar, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Tax Transactions & Consulting practice. “In particular, his extensive experience in the development and structuring of complex derivatives and in working with both buyers and sellers of these products will enable us to expand the range of services we can offer to clients. He also is on the forefront of helping both domestic and overseas clients weave through the new landscape of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and other tax regulatory developments.”

Mr. Leeds focuses his practice on the tax consequences of a variety of capital markets products and strategies, including over-the-counter derivative transactions, swaps, tax-exempt derivatives and strategies for efficient utilization of tax attributes, such as net operating losses. He has worked with a variety of clients, including banks, hedge funds and family offices. A significant portion of his work involves the taxation of financial products and trading strategies engaged in by banks and other financial market participants. He also advises hedge funds and other investment vehicles on formation and trading matters.

“Mayer Brown’s capabilities in tax transactions and tax controversy are unsurpassed,” Mr. Leeds said. “The firm’s broad offerings in capital markets and financial institution products and its global platform will be of great benefit to the clients I serve. Many of them also have strong relationships with Mayer Brown in other practice areas, and I welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with my new partners to better serve the clients we share.”

Earlier in his career, Mr. Leeds was a managing director and senior tax counselor with Deutsche Bank AG in New York, served as the general counsel of a credit derivative company and was a partner at Deloitte & Touche, where he led the capital markets tax practice.
