Jeffrey Tolin moves from Hogan Lovells to Cooley
Jeffrey Tolin has joined Cooley as a partner in New York. He arrives from Hogan Lovells.
“Jeff is a first-class lawyer with deep experience across a range of tax areas key to supporting our global clients and their evolving needs,” said Kathleen Pakenham, co-chair of Cooley’s tax practice. “We have worked opposite and alongside Jeff on a number of matters over the years and have always been impressed by his work and integrity. It’s a real win for our clients to have him on our side of the table.”
Tolin ensures tax efficiency for his clients, which supports their business objectives. His clients include multinational corporations, private equity funds, partnerships and non-US resident individuals, as well as charities and other tax-exempt organizations. He is experienced in a variety of industry sectors, including telecommunications, media and technology, life sciences and automotive.
On transactional matters, Tolin engages in structuring, contract negotiation and post-transactional planning, with an emphasis on international aspects. Additionally, he advises large clients in connection with long-term tax planning and the management of their tax environments, as well as with audit and compliance matters.
“Cooley is one of the world’s top firms guiding major transactions for industry heavyweights and critical deals for startups, each of which bring their own unique and complicated tax situations,” said Tolin. “I have been eager to work with this collaborative team and look forward to delivering further successes for clients together.”
Tolin has written extensively for, and contributed to, New York State Bar Association reports on domestic and international tax topics. A featured speaker and panelist at numerous international tax conferences, he has also lectured in continuing legal education programs.
Tolin began his legal career at Chadbourne & Parke before moving to a predecessor firm of what is now Hogan Lovells. He graduated from the University of Chicago and earned his JD and LLM from the New York University School of Law.
His arrival follows that of tax partners Alexander Lee and David Wilson, who joined Cooley last year in Los Angeles and London, respectively.
Cooley’s tax practice, which has been recognized by Legal 500 US and Best Lawyers, focuses on all facets of US federal, state, local and international tax law. The group handles 1,000+ transactions annually, providing tax advice to clients across a variety of sectors – from small deals involving startups to multibillion-dollar mergers and acquisitions.
