In Orrick, Orrick Rambaud Martel, Squire Patton Boggs

Squire Patton Boggs has announced that it has appointed Charles Briand as a partner in its Tax Strategy & Benefits Practice Group in Paris.

Mr. Briand’s practice focuses on corporate and transaction tax, cross-border M&A, the tax aspects of financing arrangements, and tax structuring and integration projects.  With extensive experience of tax matters in several sectors, he has also developed a strong focus on private equity (PE) structure and taxation, PE M&A, and communication infrastructure projects.

At Orrick Rambaud Martel since 2017, Mr. Briand previously spent nearly 12 years at EY Société d’avocats in Paris, advising on the tax structuring operation of M&A and PE transactions. During that time, he worked for 18 months with EY’s international transactional services group in New York, where he further enhanced his cross-border tax experience and his knowledge of US tax issues. Mr. Briand, who holds a Diplôme d’études approfondies in tax law from the Université Panthéon Assas (Paris II), has completed the program at EFB (École de Formation Professionnelle des Barreaux de la Cour d’appel de Paris) and is admitted to the Paris bar. He has been recognized most recently as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ in The Legal 500 EMEA – Tax (Transactional/Corporate Tax) 2021, particularly for his “growing reputation in the private equity sphere”.

Mitch Thompson, global leader of the Tax Strategy & Benefits Practice Group, said, “World-class expertise is an essential part of our global practice, both in the Paris Office and the larger firm.  Charles has that high-quality transactional tax expertise, extensive cross-border experience, and a strong commercial awareness and intellectual depth, which are hallmarks of our global tax team. I know he will fit in really well with our collegial and collaborative culture at the firm to serve and delight clients.”

Paris office managing partner, Carole Sportes added: “It’s a pleasure to welcome Charles to our growing team here in Paris. With the energy and skillset that he brings, he will play a key role in expanding both our domestic tax work and our cross-border support for clients, as we continue to implement strategic plans to strengthen our transactional capabilities, particularly in corporate and private equity.”
