Tax guru Ron Schultz reunites with Steven Miller at alliantgroup
alliantgroup has announced the addition of former IRS official, Ron Schultz.
A former high level advisor in a variety of different divisions within the IRS, Schultz will be leveraging his experience for the benefit of CPAs and taxpayers, helping both groups navigate uncertain tax positions and other tax controversy matters.
“I am excited to welcome Ron as the newest member of alliantNational,” said Steven Miller, former IRS Acting Commissioner and alliantgroup National Director of Tax. “In my years working side by side with Ron at the IRS, there was no better advisor. He is a technical guru and a joy to work with. His experience in multiple areas of the Service and his vast tax background as a CPA and tax lawyer will be a tremendous asset for our clients.”
While at the IRS, Schultz worked in a number of key roles. During different points in his time with the Service, he held the position of Senior Technical Advisor for the Commissioner of Tax Exempt and Government Entities (TEGE), for the IRS Commissioner of Large and Midsize Business (LMSB), and for the Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement. In these different capacities, Schultz provided superb technical guidance on key matters to the IRS. In his work in LMSB and for the Deputy Commissioner, he developed strategies for sensitive and high profile IRS compliance initiatives, including international and offshore compliance, high income and high wealth individuals, voluntary disclosure programs, and the IRS initiative requiring reporting of uncertain tax positions by business taxpayers on a new Schedule UTP.
“I couldn’t be happier to be joining such an excellent team of professionals,” said Schultz. “It is a pleasure to be working once more with great people such as Steven Miller and Kathy Petronchak. I look forward to assisting CPAs and providing support to those businesses and other taxpayers that are trying to do things by the book with respect to tax compliance.”
In his time advising the Commissioner of TEGE, Schultz worked closely with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and the Office of Tax Policy in the Department of Treasury to develop technical guidance and legislative proposals that would support compliance initiatives in regards to tax exempt organizations, employee plans and government entities. Included in such reforms was his ground breaking work in the development of the redesigned IRS Form 990 and his assistance in formulating and implementing key IRS EO compliance programs pertaining to nonprofit governance, executive compensation, unrelated business income tax, nonprofit hospitals, and public and private colleges and universities.
In addition to his time at the IRS, Schultz’s 25-plus years of tax experience includes positions with the United States Congress Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, a Fortune 500 corporate tax department where he worked on federal and state tax law compliance, and as a partner in private law practice. While with the Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, Schultz assisted in the development of various tax legislative proposals, including exemption requirements for health care and other types of organizations, charitable contributions, public charity and private foundation excise taxes, prohibited tax shelter transactions, Form 990 and 990-T reporting, and credit counseling organizations. Most recently, he was a Managing Director in Washington, D.C. with a Big Four accounting firm.
“Ron is one of the most respected attorneys in Washington, D.C. when it comes to the tax laws and charities and charitable giving,” said Dean Zerbe, alliantgroup National Managing Director. “I looked to Ron for guidance and illumination on almost a daily basis when I worked on the Senate Finance Committee and Ron served on the Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation. I am delighted that our clients will have the benefit of Ron’s superb talents and ability to bring solutions.”
