BDO Canada celebrates 8 new tax partner hires during 2017
BDO Canada LLP has announced the appointment of eight new tax partners.
Joanne SunJoanne Sun leads BDO’s Global Expatriate Services group in Vancouver. She joined BDO in January from PwC and brings extensive experience providing global mobility and tax services to clients in cross-border executive compensation issues and expatriate policy design and implementation.
Mitch LaBuick joined BDO in February from MNP. Based in the Edmonton office, Mitch has over 25 years of experience with indirect tax, including the implementation of GST while at the Canada Revenue Agency, the transition to HST and back to provincial retail sales tax in British Columbia, and the HST transition in Ontario. For the past 18 years, Mitch has focused on large and medium-sized business reorganizations, cross-border and non-residential transactions, and commodity tax planning.
Dan Kostenchuk joined BDO in March from PwC. Dan is a tax partner based in Winnipeg, where he focuses on providing proactive tax planning and compliance services to private companies. For 13 years, he has assisted clients with the tax aspects of estate planning, succession planning, compensation planning, purchasing and selling businesses, and business restructuring. Dan is also an instructor at the Asper School of Business and a group study leader for CPA Canada’s In-depth Tax Course.
Dan Lundenberg leads BDO’s U.S. Corporate Tax Services from the downtown Toronto office. He joined BDO in March from Grant Thornton and brings over 20 years of U.S. corporate tax experience as well as considerable publishing and public speaking experience. Dan is a U.S. trained tax lawyer with wide-ranging knowledge relating to the U.S. tax needs of Canadian businesses.
David ElrickDavid Elrick joined BDO’s Winnipeg office in May, bringing over 12 years of experience providing corporate and personal tax planning strategies for family-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, and large corporations. He specializes in advising clients undergoing acquisitions, dispositions, and business restructurings and has provided comprehensive advice on acquisition structuring, tax due diligence, tax modeling, and post-acquisition services. He is a member of the CPA Manitoba Tax Committee and the Canadian Tax Foundation and is active in tax education, leading tutorials for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada’s In-depth Tax Course.
Trevor Thomson is a partner in the Calgary office. He joined BDO in May, bringing over 22 years of professional experience providing taxation and business advisory services to privately-owned and public businesses. Trevor has successfully assisted a number of clients with mergers and acquisitions, transaction advisory, corporate reorganizations, estate planning, equity compensation, and related advisory services. Trevor has been a presenter at Canadian Tax Foundation conferences and other industry events and has authored papers on various taxation topics for the Canadian Tax Foundation.
Kevin Yuill joined BDO in July and is based in the firm’s Halifax office. With more than 14 years of professional experience providing tax and estate planning services to small and medium-sized businesses in a range of industries, Kevin has successfully assisted a number of clients with implementing tax efficient corporate structures and estate tax minimization. Kevin has taught the In-Depth Tax course program, lectured professional development courses for ICANS, lectured at the CTF Atlantic Provinces Tax Conference and taught courses at ASCA.
Janice RussellJanice Russell is based in Toronto, where she is a member of our Transaction Tax team and the Tax Lead of BDO’s Financial Services group. She joined the firm in September, bringing more than 25 years of experience providing a range of tax services to clients in the financial services, private equity, and real estate sectors and has in-depth knowledge and experience in tax matters relating to mergers and acquisitions. Janice is the former Co-Chair of the Canadian Bar Association/Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada Joint Committee on Taxation.

The Firm also hired Bruce Goudy in October as a Director within the Indirect Tax practice. Mr Goudy has run his own boutique firm for the past 5 years, but before this was a Tax Partner at EY.
