Paulus Merks joins Houthoff’s Tax Team
On 1 January, Paulus Merks joined Houthoff’s tax advisory practice. The firm expects its tax advisory practice to double in size by the end of 2018.
An expert in domestic and international tax law, Paulus Merks advises on M&A transactions, restructurings, reorganisations, public offerings and transfer pricing. He also litigates disputes with the tax authorities, as well as advising on general tax-law matters. Merks regularly advises US and other non-Dutch companies on how best to structure their worldwide operations and acquisitions.
“Houthoff’s international ambition fits perfectly with my own ambitions. Houthoff has an excellent relationship with top US firms and I look forward to further strengthening that relationship from a tax perspective,” Merks says about his move to Houthoff.
Merks has degrees in Dutch tax law from the University of Amsterdam and in US tax law from the University of San Francisco. He previously worked as a tax lawyer in New York, Paris, Chicago and San Jose (California).
Merks is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the Dutch Association for Tax Research (Vereniging voor Belastingwetenschap), the International Fiscal Association (IFA), the International Bar Association (IBA) and the European American Tax Institute. The author of several tax publications, and a regular speaker at international tax conferences, Merks also lectures at the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (IBFD), the SDU Licent Academy and the Advanced LL.M. in International Tax Law at Leiden University.
