The Hartford Financial Services Group appoints ex IRS man, Michael R. Chesman, as senior vice president, associate general counsel and director of tax law
The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., (NYSE: HIG), has announced that Michael R. Chesman was named senior vice president, associate general counsel and director of tax law. Chesman, 63, joins The Hartford from the Internal Revenue Service, where he was director of the Office of Professional Responsibility. Chesman will report to Alan Kreczko, executive vice president and general counsel.
“Michael’s impressive and proven background as a seasoned leader and tax lawyer will be a tremendous asset to The Hartford,” said Kreczko. “I look forward to working with Michael as he will bring a wealth of strategic counsel to the law department and company overall.”
As director of tax law, Chesman will oversee and set strategic direction for The Hartford’s tax law group. He joins the company from the Internal Revenue Service, where he served as director of the Office of Professional Responsibility. In this role, he led an organization that sets ethical standards and regulates the professionals who practice before the IRS. Chesman began his career at the IRS, specializing in life and casualty insurance taxation before he moved on to Prudential Financial, where he spent 25 years in positions of increasing responsibility in the company’s law department. Following his tenure at Prudential, Chesman returned to the IRS and led the Office of Taxpayer Burden Reduction before he was appointed director of the Office of Professional Responsibility.
Chesman earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He is a member of the bar in Virginia and the District of Columbia Chesman resides in Hartford.
