Sutherland Partner appointed Benefits Tax Counsel at Treasury Dept.
Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP has announced that George Bostick, one of the founders of the firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Team, has been appointed Benefits Tax Counsel at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He will assume the position on September 14.
The Office of the Benefits Tax Counsel develops[private] and reviews policy, legislation, regulations, and revenue rulings dealing with all aspects of employee benefits taxation and related matters including qualified retirement plans, health benefits and other employee welfare plans, social security taxes, and executive compensation. As Benefits Tax Counsel, George will be responsible for advising the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, the General Counsel of the Treasury and others within Treasury in the formulation of the Administration’s employee benefits and executive compensation policy.

George’s career with Sutherland spans more than three decades. He has worked in the area of employee benefits and executive compensation for his entire career, more recently focusing primarily on executive compensation matters, controversy work involving compensation and benefit arrangements, cross-border benefits, and employee stock ownership and other equity compensation plans. He joined the firm following a clerkship for the Honorable John Godbold of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. George served from 1978 to 1980 as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center. He is a graduate of University of Virginia School of Law, where he served as Notes Editor of the Virginia Law Review, and Emory University, where he majored in economics. He is a former Chair of various American Bar Association committees dealing with employee benefits and executive compensation, a Charter Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, and a member of the Steering Committee of the International Pension and Employee Benefits Lawyers Association.
