HMRC adopts Orwellian tactics
I find this quite staggering, but HMRC in their wisdom are launching a TV advertising campaign this evening, encouraging people to inform on suspected tax dodgers. There is a whistle-blowing hotline that can be contacted if you suspect someone of cheating the system.
I have no doubt that this hotline will be abused to wreak revenge on nightmare neighbours or irritating colleagues. The scope for mis-use is huge and one has to wonder whether the time and manpower required to investigate suspected tax dodgers will be greater than the eventual windfall.
Anyway, for those of you with a viscious nature (or battling for partnership), here is the number: 0800 788 887. Lines are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.
