MWE hires federal tax partner, Thomas W. Giegerich
McDermott Will & Emery has announced that Thomas W. Giegerich has joined the Firm as a partner in the New York office and the head of the office’s federal tax practice. Mr. Giegerich advises U.S. and international clients on various corporate tax planning and transactional matters, including taxable and tax-free mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, corporate restructurings, cross-border joint venture and distribution arrangements and finance transactions. Prior to joining McDermott, Mr. Giegerich was a partner with an international law firm headquartered in New York City.
“Tom is a significant addition to our tax practice and he will be leading the continued development of the federal tax practice in our New York office,” commented Michael Fayhee, head of the Firm’s Tax Department. “His experience working with non-U.S. companies on U.S. related tax matters is an asset to a number of our clients and our practice as a whole.”
Mr. Giegerich has extensive experience advising on the U.S. tax issues faced by foreign multinationals and foreign-owned U.S. multinationals, including tax treaty issues, repatriation strategies and transfer pricing, and he has handled numerous projects involving multi-jurisdictional tax issues. Mr. Giegerich has also represented clients in tax disputes before the Internal Revenue Service involving a variety of matters.
Mr. Giegerich earned his J.D. with distinction from Duke University School of Law in 1980; his LL.M. in taxation from New York University Law School in 1986 and his B.A. in philosophy, graduating summa cum laude, from Fordham University in 1977. He is admitted to practice in New York and before the U.S. Tax Court. He is a member of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association, and the Tax Section of the U.S. Council for International Business, as well as a member of The Tax Club.
