Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Further Expands Tax Practice with hiring of Jonathan Zhu
Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a premier provider of legal services to technology, life sciences, and growth enterprises worldwide, has announced that Jonathan Zhu has become a new partner in its tax practice.
With substantial experience in a wide range of domestic and international tax matters, Zhu will be based in the firm’s Palo Alto office. He is the second new partner to join Wilson Sonsini’s tax department recently, with fellow former Heller Ehrman partner Michael Faber joining the firm’s New York office last week.
“Jonathan is an outstanding addition to our tax department,” said CEO John Roos. “He brings extensive international tax experience, which is becoming increasingly valuable as we expand our global practice. Jonathan also will provide additional support for our mergers and acquisitions and general corporate and partnership tax practices. Not only is he a highly talented attorney, but he has substantial expertise as a management consultant and an impressive technical background. We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”
Zhu has significant experience with federal income tax planning for domestic and foreign investors in a broad spectrum of U.S. investment assets, including technology companies, real estate, infrastructure, and financial assets. He also regularly advises foreign clients regarding U.S. tax issues arising from non-investment activities—such as the provisioning of services and sales of goods—in the U.S. In addition, he counsels clients in connection with the tax aspects of domestic mergers and acquisitions. Notably, he has served as primary tax counsel to a multinational investment and asset management company in numerous cross-border transactions, and to two sovereign wealth funds in a billion-dollar investment in a major U.S. utility.
Prior to joining the firm, Zhu was a tax partner at Heller Ehrman in San Francisco. He also previously was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, where he advised clients on strategy, operations, and organizational matters in enterprise software, networking, and wireless communications, as well as pharmaceuticals. Before entering law school, Zhu conducted extensive original research in theoretical condensed matter physics and published 28 papers in leading journals. A native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, Zhu earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1998, a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992, and a B.S. in physics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1987.
