PwC Tax Director rejoins Miller Canfield
Miller Canfield has announced that tax lawyer, [private]Gregory A. Nowak, J.D., CPA, one of Michigan’s leading experts on state and local tax issues, has re-joined the firm in its Business Litigation and Trial Group. He will specialize in state and local taxation.
Nowak began his legal career at Miller Canfield and has spent the past 16 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (Detroit) where he was a partner and served in various roles including leading its State and Local Tax Consulting practice in Michigan.
He is currently the Chair-Elect of the Board of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA) and has served as Chairman of its State and Local Tax Committee. He is a member of the Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Tax Section of the State Bar of Michigan and a former Chair of its State and Local Tax Committee, and has served as the managing editor of the American Bar Association Taxation Section publication, The State and Local Tax Lawyer. He also serves as the Chairman of the Detroit Regional Chamber Tax Committee and has served as an advisor to the Michigan legislature on tax policy issues.
He has received various awards for his contributions to the state, business community, and the professions in the area of state and local taxation. He was the first recipient in 2007 of the Detroit Regional Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award for contributions to the business community and to tax policy during the enactment of the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) and repeal of the service tax; he was the first recipient in 2008 of the MACPA Hoatlin Award for contributing to the relationship between the CPA profession and the Michigan Department of Treasury; and he received the Special Recognition Award from the MACPA in 2009 for contributions in the area of state and local taxation in Michigan.
Nowak has been a CPA since 1986. He received his J.D. from Wayne State University School of Law and his B.A. in accounting from Michigan State University. [/private]
