Ex Gibson Dunn Tax Lawyer, Jenny Wheater, joins Proskauer in London
Jenny Wheater, a lawyer with a wide range of experience in UK and international tax issues, has joined Proskauer as a Partner in London, expanding the depth of the firm’s London Private Investment Funds practice and Tax Department, and continuing the growth of its global transactional platform.
A UK and U.S.-qualified lawyer, Ms. Wheater has extensive experience in UK tax law pertaining to: fund formation; corporate transactions, including mergers & acquisitions; private equity; restructurings; and employee incentive plans, including share schemes and carried interest structures. She has also been involved in the establishment of UK, pan-European and global alternative investment funds, and has significant expertise with regard to tax treaty implications and the coordination of UK and U.S. taxes, in addition to advising on VAT issues. Formerly a lawyer in the tax and investment funds practices at Gibson Dunn in London, Ms. Wheater received her Master of Laws from Georgetown University and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Durham.
“As we continue to grow our platform and expand in the London market, Jenny will be an integral part of our ability to serve the diverse needs of our private investment fund, corporate, finance, and other clients,” said Mary Kuusisto, Acting Head of Proskauer’s London office and a member of the firm’s Private Investment Funds Group and Tax Department.
In the past year, Proskauer expanded its London office with a move to more than 11,000 square feet of new space at Ten Bishops Square, and announced the additions of Bob Barry, a Partner in the firm’s Private Investment Funds Group, and Daniel Ornstein, a Partner in the firm’s Labor & Employment Law Department.
According to Andrea Rattner, Chair of Proskauer’s Tax Department, Ms. Wheater’s unique background makes her a perfect fit for the firm’s highly diversified transactional practices.
“It’s not every day that you find a UK tax lawyer who has such extensive funds and M&A experience,” said Ms. Rattner. “And because she is qualified in both the UK and U.S., Jenny understands the interaction between both countries’ tax rules, enhancing our capabilities when we handle complex cross-border deals. She is a tremendous addition to our team.”
Proskauer’s London office is a key component of the firm’s global platform, offering UK and U.S. legal advice to global private investment funds, international companies and financial institutions, entrepreneurs and investors. While the office’s representation of private investment funds is a cornerstone of Proskauer’s broader corporate practice, its lawyers also handle an array of sophisticated transactions, from middle-market to large, multi-jurisdictional deals, offering one-stop service. Additionally, the office’s junior capital lawyers are part of one of the most well-known and respected international practices representing lenders and investors in the field, and its labor and employment practice is part of one of the most recognized such groups in the world, providing the full range of employer-focused advice to clients.
The firm’s Tax Department is involved in the most complex and challenging matters of the day, advising a broad range of clients, including Fortune 500 corporations and other business entities, investment funds, institutional investors, tax-exempt organizations, executives and pop culture icons.
