Randall Bocock appointed to the Tax Court of Canada

 In Tax Court of Canada

Randall Bocock has been appointed to the Tax Court of Canada as one of the 22 judges across the country to serve on that Court.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be appointed to the Bench,” said Bocock of Evans Philp, LLP, a leading Hamilton law firm. “Particularly rewarding is to be selected to serve on this national, highly talented court.” said Bocock.

Mr. Justice Bocock’s appointment was effective September 29th 2011. The Tax Court of Canada is the newest superior court in Canada. The Court’s jurisdiction includes hearing of appeals from assessments under the Income Tax Act, the Excise Tax Act (Goods and Services Tax “GST”), the Employment Insurance Act and the Canada Pension Plan, among others.

Earlier last year, Mr. Justice Bocock was nominated and elected at the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) annual convention in San Francisco as one of fifteen ‘at-large’ members to serve a three year term, the only non-American to hold such a position.

Mr. Justice Bocock graduated from McMaster University in History and Economics and with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Ottawa. He is the Past Chair of the County and District Law Presidents’ Association (CDLPA) which represents fourty-six county and district law associations through their presidents across Ontario. At the time of his appointment, he was also:

Management Committee Chair, Evans Philp, LLP;
Head of Business and Property Law Dept, Evans Philp, LLP;
Former President of the Hamilton Law Association;
Directory and Founding Secretary of the Hamilton Shelter Health Network (HSHN) a non-profit group dedicated to facilitating the delivery of health care services to the inadequately or under housed in Hamilton’s urban society
A director on the Lawyers Professional Indemnity Company (the liability insurer for Ontario’s lawyers);
“Our firm has been around for over 90 years and although losing someone like Randall is a challenge, we are all very honoured that our firm’s legal excellence is in the news”, said Mark J. Zega, practice head of the labour and employment law department at Evans Philp.

Mr. Justice Bocock will be sworn in by the Chief, or Associate Chief Justice, at a special session of the Tax Court to be held in Hamilton in early December.
