James Bartek leaves PwC to join Alvarez & Marsal Taxand in New York
Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC has announced that James Bartek has joined the firm as managing director in New York.
With more than 20 years of tax experience, Mr. Bartek has advised numerous companies on complex indirect tax issues across a variety of industries, including telecommunications, financial services, pharmaceuticals and technology, among others. In his new role at A&M Taxand, he will focus on building a practice dedicated to indirect tax targeting the Northeast region. Additionally, he will advise clients on issues including sales and use tax matters, such as ASC 450 (fka FAS 5), reverse sales and use tax audits, audit defense and appeal, process improvement, systems automation, nexus studies, exposure review, negotiation of voluntary compliance agreements, transaction analysis and planning, and compliance services.

Prior to joining A&M Taxand, Mr. Bartek spent 17 years with the state and local tax practice in the PricewaterhouseCoopers’ New York and Florham Park, NJ offices, where he served as a tax director. During his tenure with PwC, he was recognized nationally for his relationships with state tax officials and ability to negotiate audit and refund settlements. Previously, he spent three years with the tax department of another major corporation.
Mr. Bartek earned a bachelor of sciences degree in accounting from Montclair State University, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the states of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. He is also a member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation, AICPA and New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA). Additionally, he serves as chairman of the NJSCPA State Taxation Interest Group and Sales and Use Tax work group. As a member of the New Jersey Tax Director’s Advisory Council, he assists the director with developing tax policy and improvements for administration.
