Garrigues loses tax partner Miguel Reis to PLMJ in Porto

Miguel Reis, a tax partner with Garrigues for the past 7 years, has left to join PLMJ. He is the fourth partner to join the tax team that was recently named “Portugal Tax Firm of the Year 2014” by “International Tax Review”. The team is led by João Magalhães Ramalho and also includes partners Nuno da Cunha Barnabé and Serena Cabrita Neto.

Miguel has nearly 30 years extensive experience in domestic and international taxation. He has acted for a number of clients in the commercial, industrial, services, real estate and financial services sectors, in various types of transactions, including: domestic and cross-border mergers, acquisitions, disposals, reorganizations and restructurings; inbound and outbound foreign investments, internationalization of companies; project finance, securitizations and placements of both equity and debt (both for issuers and underwriters), IPOs and other capital market and private equity transactions (both for purchasers and sellers); domestic and international stock options and stock purchase plans, estate planning and structuring for high and ultra-high net worth individuals, and day-to-day tax advice for companies and financial institutions. His role included acting on all aspects of his clients’ business, with an emphasis on his areas of practice. He coordinated many large transactions for his clients (including the related due diligence work), involving various areas of practice and external advisers of different specialties.

Miguel participates regularly as a speaker on tax issues in various conferences and seminars. He also teaches seminars in cooperation with law and business schools. He has published various articles on tax matters.

He is a member of the Portuguese Law Society (Ordem dos Advogados), the Portuguese Fiscal Association, the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA).

Miguel has been listed in the Best Lawyers (www.bestlawyers.com) for Tax in Portugal since 2010. In November 2013 he was honored with the Lawyer of the Year 2014 accolade, in the Tax category.
