Dentons recruits María Cortizas in Madrid
Dentons, the world’s largest law firm, has strengthened its tax practice in Spain with the recruitment of María Cortizas as a partner in Madrid. In her new role, she will advise clients primarily on the tax structuring of M&A deals, restructuring projects and capital markets transactions.
Before joining Dentons, Ms. Cortizas was a tax consultant at Linklaters for 11 years, and prior to that, she was a senior manager in the M&A department at KPMG Abogados. She advises on the tax structuring and planning aspects of major transactions, including restructuring, corporate reorganizations, cross-border tax planning, IPOs, and acquisitions by private equity houses and real estate funds. She also provides tax due diligence. She represents clients in tax disputes and appeals before Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court. She is recognized by The Legal 500 EMEA as ‘extremely talented and hard-working’, and has been listed by Best Lawyers every year since 2015.
“Dentons has an ambitious growth strategy for Spain, and over the next few years, will be making significant investments into enhancing our service offering in key practice areas,” said Jesús Varela, Spain Co-Managing Partner. “We are absolutely delighted to welcome a talented lawyer such as María as a senior member of our busy Tax team. With her proven track record in tax structuring, Maria will work closely with our transactional lawyers to assist clients in the structuring of their deals, investments and business activities in Spain.”
María Cortizas stated, “It is extremely challenging and exciting to join such a reputable law firm as Dentons and to help its respected Tax team consolidate its market position within Spain, with tailor-made tax solutions for our clients in an increasingly competitive environment.”
Sandra Hazan, Co-head of Dentons’ global Tax group, said, “Over the last three years Dentons’ Tax team in Europe has doubled to more than 100 professionals, and we are now seen as a disruptive force in the market. Dentons is positioned as a strong competitor not only to other law firms but also to the Big 4, because of our global footprint and full-capability tax teams.”
Dentons employs close to 250 tax consultants and lawyers worldwide.
