International trade lawyer Valerie Hughes joins Gowlings Ottawa

Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP (Gowlings has hired international trade lawyer Valerie Hughes as Partner.
Ms. Hughes joins Gowlings’ Ottawa office and the firm’s International Trade
Group following a 19-year career in the public sector, including a senior role
at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and legal counsel to the federal
government.

Prior to joining Gowlings, Ms. Hughes was Director of the Appellate Body
Secretariat of the WTO from 2001 to 2005, also serving as chief legal counsel
to the Appellate Body during that time. Previously, Ms. Hughes held a number
of senior positions including Director of the Trade Law Division of the
Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Director and
General Counsel of the General Legal Services Division of the Department of
Finance, and Senior Counsel of the International Law Section of the Department
of Justice.
